SEO - Search Engine Linking Strategies I

SEO - Search Engine Linking Strategies I
by Sean Ray

Search engine linking strategies are an important part of the search engine optimization, or SEO, of any web site. Google, especially, has made clear in statements that a major aspect of their listing algorithm is the number of links that a web page has back from other quality sites. According to Google “In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by increasing the number of high-quality sites that link to their pages”. That comes straight from the lion’s mouth.

There are a number of ways of setting up these links. When working on your linking strategy keep in mind that while a one way link away from your website can bleed relevance away from your site, this is not always the case. Sometimes a one way link to another site regarded by Google as being expert in your field can help your listings. Frequently, however, this is not the case and few sites will provide you with a link without one back. This is called reciprocal linking.

One way, then, of getting a link back to your site is to request one from websites with a good page ranking. The page ranking, or PR, of a site is indicated by the Page Rank bar on the Google Toolbar. This shows a green line that indicates the PR in figures on mouse-over. This is an indication of the link popularity of a specific web page. The higher the PR of a web page you are linked from, the better it is for your page rank and your listing in the search engine index for the specific keyword your page is optimized to.

25 Simple Blog SEO and Traffic Tips

25 Simple Blog SEO and Traffic Tips
by Jeremy Steele

This is a nice concise list of 25 ways to greatly increase your blog’s traffic and search rankings.

1) Content is king!

2) Submit your site to as many search engines as possible. After the initial indexing I would recommend resubmitting every 6 months.

3) Comment on as many blogs as possible. Make your comments thoughtful and not spammy.

4) Link up with popular blogs - trackbacks can be good for SEO as well as your traffic.

5) Write a good article and post it on a site like http://www.digg.com, although this won’t help as far as traffic goes (you will get a HUGE boost for a few hours, then it will tone back down, you probably won’t get any permanent readers from Digg) and it sure doesn’t help with your relationship with your web host, it can create some new inbound links.

6) Use http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/ . Instead of the GoogleBot searching for your pages you can tell it where your pages are. This is a great way to get your whole site indexed.

7) Content is king!

8) Get listed on web directories like http://www.dmoz.com/. Although many SEO ‘experts’ think it is overrated no one disagrees that it can help boost your site’s rankings.

9) Add some links for feed readers and blog aggregators like http://www.bloglines.com/, http://www.google.com/reader/, and http://myweb.yahoo.com/.

10) Add some social bookmarking links at the bottom of each post

11) Make it easy for your users to find your RSS feed

12) Add a ‘E-mail This!’ link either on the header or the footer of each post

13) Content is king! (see a pattern?)

14) If you write a really good post try e-mailing the URL to some big-name bloggers with a short personalized message. You never know, they might like it and link to it.

15) Try asking some big sites who are in your niche if they would like to trade links. More often than not they will say ‘no’, but at least give it a try.

16) Don’t obsess over ‘get rich quick’ schemes.

17) Don’t obsess over ‘get lots of traffic really quick’ schemes.

18) Submit your RSS feed to a bunch of RSS directories, http://www.rss-specifications.com/rss-directory.htm has a large list of popular directories.

19) Use http://pingomatic.com/ to notify a ton of aggregators that your site has been updated.

20) Don’t obsess over the numbers - it takes time to build up a good reader base.

21) Make your posts as keyword rich as possible. Whenever you can use a word that has to do with your niche, use it!

22) Use lists, especially if your site is targeted towards more tech-savvy users

23) If you have a MySpace page or a home page on a similar service put up a link to your blog.

24) Tag important keywords, using this site ( http://www.richardrodger.com/tags.htm ) you can tag keywords.

25) Last but not least, offer free stuff. Everyone loves free stuff!

The really important thing you have to remember is, just have fun. If your blog is causing you to become stressed out then it probably is not a good idea to continue blogging.

If your readers can tell you are having fun while providing good content they will become permanent readers.

10 Commandments of Domain Name Value

10 Commandments of Domain Name Value
Jason Odom

Domain Name 10 Commandments - BEFORE you choose or buy a domain name; understand the ten issues involved in choosing the right domain name the first time. First, the list that we work from when conducting a custom Domain Name Analysis (DNA). Then the explanations of each commandment follow.

TEN COMMANDMENTS OF INTERNET DOMAIN NAME VALUE
1 - The name shall have Development Value
2 - The name shall have .Dot value
3 - The name shall have Brand Recognition
4 - The name shall be Search Engine Friendly
5 - The name shall be Linguistically Viable
6 - The name shall have Traffic or Revenue
7 - The name shall have Industry Strength
8 - The name shall have Sales Value History
9 - The name shall have Intrinsic Value
10 - The name shall have Market Potential

1 - Development Value
A names base line value is based on the ability to use it. One of the primary issues we address in our DNA (Domain Name Analysis) is - Can this name be built into an instantly recognizable site whose name becomes synonymous with its content?
2 - .Dot Value
Dot.com’s are, and probably always will be, more valuable than any other .dot designation. Even Dot.net’s, and Dot.org’s are by their very nature worth less on the open market. There are many reasons for this. One reason involves search engine rankings. Other issues pertain to the consumers hard to break habits. Note that .com is the internationally recognized extension for serious Internet business sites.
3 - Brand Recognition
Simple, familiar words work better than complicated, hard-to-spell ones. Short, catchy names in attractive industry segments are also very valuable. Kleenex is an example of brand recognition in the brick and mortar world. The brand name Kleenex was originally associated with facial tissue made BY KLEENEX ONLY. Because of powerful brand recognition however the name Kleenex came to literally equal ANY brand of facial tissue. “Will you hand me a Kleenex please”. This is one of the areas where we rely heavily on our point of contact research and specialists experience with domain names. It is an area we do not analyze via computer algorithm. Rarely will any name receive an excellent valuation under this commandment unless it meets the above criteria AND carries the .Dot com extension.
For explanations of the rest of the Commandments 4 - 10, visit http://extraordinaryartist.com/domain-name.htm It’s FREE and will ensure you don’t make a mistake right up front when trying to establish a viable Internet Business.

A Quick Guide To Web Directories

A Quick Guide To Web Directories
by Karl Turnbull

If you are a seasoned Internet marketer, then it is common knowledge that submitting to web directories can dramatically increase your page rank. If you are a newbie webmaster, then you might be quite in doubt as to how web directories can do for you. This article would relay to you what exactly is a web directory, how they work, and how you can use them in promoting your site. By the end of the article, I want you to go add your link to one of the web directories on the Internet and see how it would work for you.

What are web directories?

Simply put, a Web Directory is a collection of web sites presented in a categorized format. I suppose that you know how Yellow Pages looks like, a web directory is pretty much the same thing, only this time websites are categorized in such a way that internet users can easily navigate through them and find the website that they need.

How do web directories work?

A web directory submission is one type of marketing strategy you can employ. By simply adding your website in web directories it can dramatically increase your site’s exposure and your pagerank. Why so? Of course aside for submitting your website name, you would naturally add your website link or URL to the site. This constitute for one back link. What do you need outbound links for? Increasing the number of your outbound links would relatively increase your pagerank.

A pagerank simply refers to your position in search engines results. For instance, if an online user searches for ‘car parts’, along with your SEO-content and bunch of good back links, you would likely hit the first few pages of the search results, thus increasing the exposure of your website. If back links are what you are after, then submitting your site to web directories is one effective way to get some.

Web directories are also one way of acquiring permanent links. Permanent links are very valuable since you would have your live link posted on web directories for good or at least during the lifetime of the web directory where you posted your link. It is important to take note though, that offering permanent links are still in the discretion of web directories owner.

Aside from improving your page rank, web directories are also a form of web advertising. In addition to using search engines, online users also rely on web directories to direct them to certain websites they are searching for. Since websites in web directories are categorized accordingly, navigating through them is easy and convenient. If for example one online user is about to buy bathroom tiles, he would probably go to the category under ‘home improvement’ and if your related site is under that, you are most likely to have an instant visitor, thus increasing your traffic. In the online world, traffic is everything. If you get more visitors drop by your site, then that means you have a number of potential clients, thus increasing your sales.

Choosing a web directory

There are three types of web directories – free, paid and niche directories. Free web directories are, of course, the natural choice for webmasters with a tight budget. Some free web directories requires a reciprocal link and some don’t. Reciprocal links are simply links of the web directory’s URL that you are required to post in your own site. It’s a give and take concept. When you post your website to a web directory, you need to return the favor by posting their URL to your site as well.

The only drawback with some free directories is that they may not be properly maintained. Spam sites may find their way into these free directories because they may lack appropriate monitoring. Then again, there are free web directories that can offer as much quality links than paid directories.

If you have the budget for it, you can also opt to submit your site to paid directories. These types of websites may charge as low as $10 per year. Some popular directories, like Yahoo, can charge as high as $299 as annual fees. The rate that paid web directories charge is relative to the website’s pagerank. If the web directory site you are submitting to have PR9, then prepare to shell out a big chunk of your advertising budget. A web directory with a PR3 or PR4 would normally charge low.

The third type of web directory is a niche web directory. These are web directory sites that cater to a particular group of websites. For instance, a web directory with the niche under ‘business’ would only allow submission from business websites. Posting your websites into niche web directories would give you better hits since you have a bigger exposure to your target market.

How to submit your website

First, you need to find a good web directory site. Check the web directory and be sure it does not contain several spam sites. One way to find out if spam sites are listed is by doing a search for terms like “Viagra”, “Sex” etc… If you notice a large number of search results, then that directory is not a good one. Because in worst-case scenario, your own website may even be penalized by some search engines.

The second thing you need to do is to choose the appropriate category where you should add your website to. You would get to your target audience better if you place your website in the right category. If not, you would not get much traffic from your possible visitors.

The next thing is to write a good description of your website. These are snippets that would describe what your website has to offer. Description should be short and catchy. It is also a good idea to make sure to write a good meaningful description as many directories do not approve websites with bad descriptions.

The last thing to do, which is very important and the part that is often take for granted, is to check if your link is working! You don’t want to get your website URL misspelled or anything like that, hence the whole process would be to no avail.

Article Marketing – Importance of Capturing Emails

Article Marketing – Importance of Capturing Emails
by Sean Ray

Article marketing has become a popular method of gaining traffic, or at least in theory it has. The reason I say theory is that article writing is hard work, and I think that because it is hard work, many people do not write articles for that purpose.

Contrary to the misconceptions of many people article marketing has nothing to do with selling articles. It is means of attracting traffic to your website through the use of well written articles and an intelligently constructed strategy to lead readers to your website and keep them there. It is more than that however. It is also about writing articles that are perceived by others to be good enough to be used as content on their own websites.

One of the most important things with article marketing is building a list by asking the people who visit your web site after reading your article, to subscribe to a list of yours. In many ways, although traffic generation is considered tantamount to success online, it is really in having the reader subscribe to a list of yours so that they can become repeat visitors instead of one-time visitors. This allows you to highly leverage every visitor that comes to your web site.

So how do you do it?

Simple send the readers, via the backlink in your article, to a squeeze page whose design and purpose is to compel visitors to opt in to your email list. This generally forces the reader, especially if your index, or main, page, is a squeeze page, to opt in to your list in order to read any more from you (except in your articles) or to buy any of your products.

Increase your websites search engine results by using web directories

Increase your websites search engine results by using web directories
by Darren Lambert

If you have a website and enjoy receiving traffic from search engines youll be conscious of your websites position in search engine results. By promoting your website you can increase the position of your website in search engine results. One of the best ways of promoting your website is by submitting it to web directories.

Web directories are categorised lists of websites. Each site is listed in a category that suits its content. This ensures that each website in a category is of the same topic. The benefit to the listed website is that it has a link from a page about its topic. For search engines such as Google, MSN and Yahoo this is important. The number of links that point to a website (backlinks) goes some way to determining how important the website is. The subject of the page from which the link comes is also important. Because of these reasons web directories are a good way of gaining important backlinks.

Web directories offer free and paid listings. Most free listings take a while to be accepted, typically several weeks, and the listing will appear someway down the list. Paid listings are accepted more quickly, often within days, and normally ensures the listing appears at the top of the category. Paid web directories generally offer links that are valid for 1 year, or for a lifetime. Review this carefully before paying for links.

Before submitting to web directories you should carefully consider the following details about your submissions:

- Link Title: This is used as the anchor text, and you should include your competitive keywords. Many free submission web directories only allow the website title or domain name to be used as the link title text. - Description: Write a description that accurately describes your website, focusing on the primary features and benefits of the website. Aim for around 200 words. Dont include the website URL, as most web directories do not allow this. Do include you primary and secondary keywords. - Category: Ensure you choose the most appropriate category for your website. Your link will have more value if the other listings on the page are on the same topic. Try and find categories with fewer listings, so your listing stands out.

If you are planning on submitting to more than 20 web directories, vary the link title text and the description after every 20 submissions. Search engines like to see a variation on the anchor text, and the words that surround it.

There are many lists of web directories on the internet at present. It is a hot topic. You should be able to easily find many lists, especially of free directories. Submit to as many web directories as you can. Do not worry too much about the PageRank of the directory, as all links are considered. However, the higher the PageRank the better, especially when paying for submission.

Most web directories are general directories, meaning they accept submissions for a range of topics. Whilst these web directories offer good benefit, niche directories offer the greatest link value. Try and find web directories that target the topic of your website. Popular topics, such as travel and business, have many niche directories. If you have the budget, consider paying for listings in these niche directories.

Domain Name Blunders

Domain Name Blunders - Avoid These Common Domain Name Mistakes
by Daniel Moro

Choosing a good domain name is one of most important steps in setting up your online business, but many people get it wrong. This article looks at some common mistakes that people make when choosing a domain name.

Too Hard to Remember - Dont choose a domain name that is hard to remember. Hfgkmi.com may be the initials of your business or slogan, but many of your visitors will be unable to remember it. Your domain name should be memorable and easy for visitors to recall and type into their browser.

Not Relevant - Your domain name should be relevant to your business and to the content on your web site. BlueThistle.com may be catchy but it is not a relevant domain name for your site selling hardware goods.

Too Long - Although domain names can be up to 67 characters, your domain name should be shorter, preferably 7 characters or less. Shorter domain names are easier to remember, easier to type and less susceptible to mistakes.

Double Meanings - When joining words without a hyphen be careful that you dont create any double meanings that might be embarrassing. Here are some examples to illustrate this point:

- therapistfinder.com
- choosespain.com
- molestationnursery.com (Mole Station Native Nursery in Australia)
- powergenitalia.com (Italian electricity company)
- speedofart.com

Poor Choice of Top Level Domain - If your business is in the US or if your web site is targeting a global audience then you should use .com as your top-level domain. Generally .net and .org domains are not perceived as being as professional as .com domains. If however you are marketing to a local audience in another country, for example in UK or Australia, then using the local .com domain such as .com.uk or .com.au may make it easier for visitors to recognize that your site is local.

No Trademark Conflicts - Make certain that your domain name is free of legal conflicts due to trademarks belonging to other businesses. Your new site at GoogleSecrets.com might attract a lot of traffic but it will probably attract even more after your court case is in the headlines for breaching Googles trademark! Stay clear of other companies names and trademarks.

Next time that you select a new domain name keep the above items in mind. This should help you to choose a great domain name for your online business.

Why Firefox?

Why Firefox?

Three Distinct Firefox Advantages

1. Security
Main point:• Firefox is the safest way to use the Internet.

Supporting points:
• We start with safety – We engage security experts before we even start development so we can identify and
address potential problems before a single line of code is written.
• We build Firefox to be safe – Keeping people safe online is a big reason why Firefox exists. We take security
very seriously, which is why we open our development process to allow security researchers to contribute at any
point and on any topic. If a critical bug is discovered, we’ll make it public so it can be fixed as soon as possible.
• We actively work to keep Firefox safe – Security doesn’t stop once the product has shipped. We’re constantly
monitoring threats and releasing new Firefox updates to stay ahead of the bad guys. Because we’re open source,
we have an entire community of users around the world who help us make your web browsing safer.

Other Considerations:
• It’s important to give concrete examples of potential threats rather than just mentioning the abstract concept of
“security”. People can easily relate to the ideas of identity theft, stolen credit cards, viruses, spyware and phishing,
so explaining how Firefox helps prevent these things is key.
• Specific Firefox security features include anti-phishing alerts, password manager, protection from spyware and
automatic security updates.
• The reality is that there are people out there who want to steal your personal information. That’s why we’re
constantly refining Firefox with security updates every 6-8 weeks (and more often if a fix is needed to address a
critical issue) to stay one step ahead.
• The main reason Firefox is safer is because of our open process, which allows us to identify, acknowledge and fix
bugs more quickly than the competition.

2. Customization
Main point:
• When it comes to web browsing, we believe that one size doesn’t fit all.

Supporting points:
• Firefox has the most ways to customize your online experience specifically for the way you use the web.
• Add-ons (small pieces of software that augment Firefox to meet your unique needs) enhance the browser so you
can be more productive, have more fun and be more creative online. For example, you can use the 3000+ Firefox
add-ons to:
- communicate and stay in touch
- find the best shopping deals
- listen to music
- protect your kids from inappropriate sites
- access the latest news and weather reports
- and much more…
• There are also many different themes that let you express yourself by decorating your browser in a variety of
ways.

Other considerations:
• The key challenge is getting people to think about the browser in a new way…that it’s more than just a utility. The
browser isn’t just a static window to the Internet, it can be an active part of the Internet itself.
• It’s important to demonstrate the specific benefits of add-ons…the message isn’t customization, it’s why
customization makes people’s Internet experiences better.
• It’s also important to remember the audience here…for consumer messaging, we want to focus on add-ons that
are easy to explain and have the broadest possible appeal. In other words, this means referencing ones like eBay,
FotoFox, FoxyTunes, etc rather than the more developer-centric ones.
• Using a familiar, non-technical analogy to convey a fairly technical concept is a very effective way of
communicating the role add-ons can play in your web experience. For example, using add-ons is like designing your
living space at work or building with blocks.

3. 100% Organic Software
Main point:
• Firefox is good for you: it stands for openness, innovation and freedom on the Internet.

Supporting points:
• We’re a public benefit, not-for-profit organization devoted to enriching people’s lives by preserving choice and
innovation on the Internet (as opposed to being motivated by profits, shareholder value, usage of proprietary
technology, etc.)
• We’re a global, grassroots effort – Mozilla’s products are a result of a collaboration between employees,
volunteers, universities, foundations and corporate partners. Firefox was created by an international movement of
hundreds of thousands of people from wildly different backgrounds, all seeking to develop the world’s best browser.
• Open source means a better browser for the 120 million regular Firefox users. We open up our process to
anyone and everyone in order to encourage the innovation and development of exciting new technologies that will
keep pushing the web forward and making it a better place for all.

Other considerations:
• The “100% organic software” concept sums up a fairly complex situation using a metaphor people can easily
recognize. Organic stands for something that’s better for you, something trusted, something of higher quality…all
key ingredients of Mozilla and Firefox.
• We need to focus less on the technical aspects of open source, which is hard for people to understand, and
concentrate more on the tangible user benefits – innovation, accessibility, freedom, a better web, etc – to reach
more potential users.
• A great example of the power of open source is the fact that Mozilla only has roughly 100 employees, yet is able
to compete with some of the biggest companies in the world because of our amazing international community.
• Although the 100% organic concept really applies to the Mozilla organization as a whole, for our consumer
messaging we need to show how this process ties back in to Firefox…the organic nature of our software
development has created a healthier, higher quality browser that makes the web better for you.
